Pola Office

Pola Office – Powder and Liquid 1 patient kit (SDI)

Pola Office is a powder and liquid in-office tooth whitening system from SDI .

Pola Office 1 patient kit
  • 35% hydrogen peroxide system.
  • 1 patient kit contains:
    • 2 pots of powder of 0.3 gms each
    • 2 syringes of 2ml each
    • 1 gingival barrier of 1 gm
  • This kit is to be used for 1 patient.
Pros:
  • 1 pot and 1 syringe is to be used for 2 applications in a single sitting. Hence, it is extremely user friendly as dentist doesn’t have to concentrate on appropriate mixing.
  • 4 applications can be done in a short chair side time of 30 minutes.
  • Contains potassium nitrate as desensitizing agent.
  • Doesn’t require curing light.
Cons:
  • Requires multiple applications for result.
  • Sometimes causes sensitivity.
  • In case only a few teeth are to be whitened and not the whole mouth, there can be considerable wastage of material if applications are not completed within 20 minutes of first mixing the pot.
Composition of Pola Office:
  • Pola office liquid:
    • 35% hydrogen peroxide
    • 65% water
  • Pola office powder:
    • 73.26% thickeners
    • 26.2% catalysts
    • 0.04% dye
    • 0.5% desensitizing agent
  • Gingival barrier:
    • 83.95% methacrylic ester
    • 16% silica
    • 0.04% pigment
    • 0.01% butylated hydroxy toulene
How to use Pola Office ( For vital teeth):
  • Record the pre-operative shade. Patient with translucent teeth or Vita C shade should be told to either not to undergo whitening or have reduced expectations.
  • Clean the teeth with pumice based polish only.
  • Place the cheek retractors and apply petroleum gelly over the lips.
  • Dry the teeth.
  • Apply gingival barrier between the teeth and gums including the interproximal spaces.
  • Cure the barrier for 10-20 seconds by using the light in a fanning motion.
  • Open a powder pot. Open a syringe, tighten a tip over it, withdraw the plunger to reduce any pressure in the syringe and carefully extrude the entire liquid into the pot.
  • Use an applicator tip and mix the ingredients to form a thick gel.
  • Apply this gel over all the labial/buccal surfaces of the teeth using the applicator tip.
  • Leave the gel on the teeth for 8 minutes. You can use a curing light. The heat speeds up the process of whitening. If a patient feels sensitivity while using a curing light, stop immediately.
  • Remove the gel using a thin suction tip. A thick suction tip can spread the gel all over the mouth.
  • One pot can be used for maximum 2 applications. Once mixed, a pot should used within 20 mins. So second application should be done now.
  • If required, the second pot can be mixed and used immediately. A maximum of 4 applications should be done in a single sitting.
  • After the last application, the gel should be suctioned off, teeth rinsed and suctioned.
  • Remove the gingival barrier by lifting it from one end using a sharp probe.

Review of Pola Office

Pola office is one the original in-office teeth whitening systems from SDI. Now Pola Rapid and Pola Office + are also available.

Pola Office + is composed of 37.5% Hydrogen Peroxide, takes 30 minutes, whereas, Pola Rapid is composed of 38% Hydrogen Peroxide and takes 24 minutes.

There is not much of a difference in results but regarding ease of handling and total time taken. Pola Office + comes as a double barrel syringe, is mixed and ejected on a mixing pad for further mixing and application on the teeth using an applicator tip.

Whereas, Pola Rapid comes in a double barrel syringe which can be directed applied onto the teeth. Applicator tip is used to spread the gel uniformly over the teeth.

Most other companies use only the gel form. The advantage being ease of handling.

I have used both Pola Office and Pola Office + and have found ease of handling to be far better in the latter. Similarly wastage is also reduced in the latter.

Pola Office still has a place as being the cheapest amongst the 3 in-office options from SDI with comparable results if not better in some situations.
