AvuePREP – EDTA gel ( Dental Avenue)

AvuePrep is a water soluble Ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (EDTA) gel for root canal cleaning from Dental Avenue

AvuePrep EDTA Gel
  • Composition:
    • EDTA Disodium salt 15 w/w%
    • Carbamide Peroxide 10 w/w%
    • Lubricants & excipients
  • Available as
    • 3 gm syringe
    • 2 x 3 gm syringe
    • 6 gm syringe
    • 15 gm plastic jar
Pros:
  • As it is water soluble, allows it to be washed away easily by irrigating the canal.
  • EDTA when used with sodium hypochlorite is an effective chelating agent.
  • The lubricant in the gel helps in easier preparation of the canal.
  • Phase separation is not usually seen.
  • Long shelf life of 2 years from date of manufacturing.
Cons:
  • As compared to a paste form of EDTA, doesn’t easily coat the file.
Mode of Action:
EDTA
  • 17% EDTA is an effective chelating agent, that removes the inorganic ( dentine etc) components inside the canal. It can be used after the mechanical preparation for removal of the smear layer.
  • AvuePREP has 15% EDTA and is used DURING mechanical preparation. The presence of glycol in the composition enable lubrication of the canal and also prevents fracture or separation of file. It should always be preceded and followed with an irrigation of 2% or 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite, which dissolves organic matter and has an anti-bacterial effect.
CARBAMIDE PEROXIDE
  • Peroxides in concentration between 1-30% has been used widely in endodontics for disinfection and sterilization. This is usually done by the release of hydroxyl free radicals by the method of effervescence or bubbling.
  • AvuePREP uses 10% carbamide peroxide. It improves the cleansing activity when used along with Sodium hypochlorite. Also effective as an anti-bacterial agent when used along with 2% Chlorhexidine, specially against secondary infections of E. Faecalis.
  • Carbamide peroxide in presence of water breaks down into free radicals, which penetrates the enamel and dentine pores and causes bleaching. This can remove stains from inside the tooth (internal bleach). Though the concentration available in AvuePREP may not be effective as an internal bleach.

Review of AvuePREP

I have used AvuePREP EDTA gel for my root canal treatment patients. Dental Avenue is a Indian company based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra.

I have found AvuePREP slightly difficult to work with as it doesn’t coat the file easily. If you can be patient with this or work with introducing the gel directly into the canal using the provided canula before introducing your file into the canal, it may not be a big issue.

I have not found any phase separation though which is good.

Though Glyde file prep root conditioner remains a gold standard in the field, products like AvuePREP and Endoprep-RC have a place too in the market, mostly due to their cheaper price as compared to Glyde file prep.
