Waldent Premium Plus Airotor

Waldent Premium Plus Airotor is manufactured by Waldent .

Waldent Premium Plus Airotor handpiece
  • Stainless steel body.
  • Push Button system.
  • Available as
    • Standard Head (W-121)
    • Super torque (W-122)
Pros:
  • Small in length – This handpiece is small in length as compared to any other handpiece available in the market. This enables easier fit in the hand but requires getting used to. The length though may be a factor while working on the posterior teeth on certain patients. Hence, the shorter length is not an absolute advantage but makes it different from other handpieces and can be of attraction for clinicians.
  • Push button system – Though it makes the head slightly bulky, push button system is always a time saving advantage for the clinician. Even with the push-button system, the head of this handpiece is still smaller than a NSK standard head (chuck type) and much smaller than the NSK standard head (push button type).
  • Ceramic ball bearing – Ceramic ball bearing produces less vibration and hence lesser noise in operation. Also as it is corrosion resistant, it lasts longer.
  • Double water spray jets – The double water jets cools the bur, tooth and dental materials during operation. Also the water jet removes debris from the bur and working field. Though there are 2 jets, both the jets are located next to each other, which makes the water spray unidirectional unlike say a NSK airotor which has water spray from all around the bur.
Water spray hole comparision
  • Bordon 2 hole connection – This connection (commonly also referred to as B2 connection) is available in most chairs resulting in a leak proof connection.
Cons:
  • Warranty – Carries a 3 month warranty on cartridge & bearings, though a 1 year warranty on body.

Review of Waldent Premium Plus Airotor

In a sea of cheap air turbines, does Waldent Premium Plus Airotor do enough to stand out?

There are 2 types of airotor handpieces, one ‘branded’ costly ones, viz. NSK, KaVo, W&H etc and then the cheaper ones (mostly Chinese) viz. Being Foshan, Waldent, Apple etc.

Waldent Premium Plus Airotor dental handpiece is hence one of the cheaper handpieces which doesn’t come with a LED but has a push button system.

It operates at a air pressure of 0.18 – 0.25 MPa.

It can be autoclaved at 132°C for 15 mins or 121°C for 20 mins in a sealed autoclavable pouch.

I have found the handpiece to produce very low noise while working. Also water spray is adequate but can ‘feel’ less at times. The interesting though controversial feature is its length. It is one of the smallest handpiece you will see in the market. As discussed earlier, this is both an advantage as well as a limitation. The major limitation of the handpiece is the torque, which is underwhelming when compared to similar handpieces in the price range. Though the ‘Super torque’ head delivers a higher torque than the ‘Standard’ head.

Another question is the reliability of the handpiece? As the cartridges hardly last a year, if you have a busy practice, this cannot be the only handpiece you have. You will have to have multiple ones and this can be your standby option. Check out our review of NSK FX Plus airotor handpiece here.

If the only reason you are buying Waldent Premium Plus Airotor is the price, it won’t disappoint you but don’t expect a long lasting versatile handpiece.
