NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2) belongs to NSK’s FX Plus series of air turbine dental handpieces, made in Japan, one of the most powerful and latest generation of handpieces.

NSK FX Plus Standard Head
  • All FX Plus (FXP) series of airotors come with:
    • Approx 30 W of power
    • Internal air pressure regulating valve
    • Ceramic bearings
    • Push button chuck
    • Quattro water spray
    • Non-optic
  • The types of FXP series handpieces are:
    • QD Coupling – FXP-MU QD, FXP-SU QD
    • Midwest 4 Hole – FXP-MU M4, FXP-SU M4
    • Borden 2 Hole – FXP-MU B2, FXP-SU B2
  • All specifications of standard head (SU) or miniature head (MU) are similar for all the 3 different coupling. For example, FXP-SU QD, FXP-SU M4 & FXP-SU B2, has exact same specification but used for different coupling as per chair.

  • SU – Standard Unit/head.

Pros of NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2):
  • NSK FXP-SU B2 Airotor comes with a maximum power of 30 W. This is 60% higher than it’s previous versions.
  • It has a rotational speed of 325,000 to 410,000 per minute.
  • It’s head size is 12.1 mm diameter and 13.3 mm height. This is the standard head size. This is bigger than the previous gen PanaAir FX head diameter of 11.2mm, though similar height of 13.4 mm.
  • It has a push button auto-chuck. This allows for easy change of burs and longer life of cartridge. Though the height of the head is bigger when compared to a manual chuck system.
  • The ceramic bearings are supposedly 25% stronger steel bearing. This makes it last longer. Also ceramic being lighter, weight of the head reduces too.
  • ARV system (Anti-retraction valve) prevents suck back of saliva & debris into the head, thereby preventing cross contamination and also prolongs the life of the bearing and cartridge.
  • Quattro water spray (multi hole spray) allows for effective cooling & cleaning of the cutting surface and bur/diamond.
Cons of NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2):
  • There is no Optic (LED) version of this handpiece, which is though available as a separate category (DynaLED). The same handpiece with similar specifications with LED is M600LG B2 – one major disadvantage of it is it’s 16 W of power, which is even lower than 20W, delivered by the previous generation of PanaAir FX series of airotors (PAF-SU B2), again a non-LED type.   • Slightly bigger diameter of the head of this airotor can be a problem in patients with restricted mouth opening. Here the miniature head (FXP-MU B2) with diameter of 10.6 mm and height of 12.4 mm will come in use.
Sterilization or storage of NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2):
  • This handpiece can be manually cleaned or machine cleaned in a machine cleaner (a dishwasher made for dental equipments).
  • It can be autoclave in a steam autoclaved at 135 °C in a closed autoclavable pouch.
  • The autoclaved handpiece can be stored in the pouch till further use.
  • Lubrication of the handpiece should be done using recommended handpiece oil spray. It can be done manually or using the lubrication machine (iCare)

Review of NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2)

NSK airotors bring a sense of familiarity for every dentist. It is also a reliable piece of equipment. Careful handling gives you years of service something no cheaper handpiece can give. Though NSK handpieces are expensive compared to multiple cheaper options like Waldent or Being Foshan handpieces, I believe, longevity and it’s reliability, gives NSK handpieces an edge in the long run.

NSK FX Plus Airotors are the latest generation of airotors which comes with 30W of power. This is the primary difference from previous handpieces. This is similar to other ‘high-speed’ or ‘super-torque’ options of other brands. So this handpiece can be used for every cavity preparation or any tooth preparation for crowns.

One of the problem with this handpiece is its head diameter of 12.1 mm, one of the biggest in the market. If you have a patient with restricted mouth opening or a kid patient, this handpiece will be very difficult to use.

NSK FX Plus Airotor (FXP-SU B2) is a workhorse for your dental office but you will require another airotor with smaller head diameter & height for your patients with restricted mouth openings or pediatric patients.
