ProGel – B, is an oral anaesthetic gel made by Septodont.
- 20% benzocaine gel is a water insoluble ester type of anaesthetic agent.
- It is available in a 30 grams jar.
- Used as topical anaesthetic gel.
Pros:
- 20% Benzocaine is fast acting. Studies have shown a topical application time of minimum 1 minute reduces pain specially before an injection1. If a 5% Benzocaine is used, onset of action is minimum of 3 minutes.
- ProGel – B comes in mint flavor, which is dye free and has no bitter taste.
- It is effective for 5-10 mins.
- Gel form of ProGel – B is an advantage as it restricts the area of application and hence reduces chances of accidental swallowing.
Cons:
- Swallowing of the gel can be harmful and if possible avoided. The patient can be asked to rinse after the onset of anaesthetic action.
Uses:
- As a surface anaesthetic before local anaesthetic injection.
- Temporary relief caused due to traumatic ulcers from dentures, orthodontic appliances or even from apthous ulcers.
- Temporary relief of gingiva before the procedure of scaling or tooth preparation during crowns or deep proximal cavity preparations.
Review of Progel – B
I have used Progel – B , an oral topical anaesthetic gel from Septodont for few years now.
In short, it does it’s job. Though it can be used in ulcers etc, it is better to use it under supervision of dentist viz before local anaesthetic injection and before scaling. Patient should be asked to rinse the mouth once the onset of action is determined. This prevents harmful effects of Benzocaine from swallowing.
It is best to apply it using a cotton bud for a duration of no less than 1 minute to get a proper topical anaesthesia.
The gel form of Progel – B restricts its ‘flow’ in the mouth, providing more comfort to the patient. Also, it is watery enough to apply easily to the mucosa and it sticks to the mucosa too. Overall a good product from Septodont.
