Cavit G: Temporary filling material

Cavit G is a temporary filling material.

Cavit G
  • Available in 28 g jar
  • Gray colour
  • Soft
Pros:
  • Proven temporary filling material.
  • Easy to use with a filling instrument.
  • Self cures in a moist environment.
  • Linear hygroscopic expansion results in excellent marginal seal.
  • Doesn’t interfere with bonding of permanent filling materials like composite.
  • Long shelf life.
Cons:
  • Minimum of 3.5mm of material thickness required.
  • Long curing and setting time. Patient should be asked to chew on that side only after 2 hours.
  • Deteriorates with time. Study shows, leakage occurs after 9 days.
  • Lid of the jar should be closed immediately after use, otherwise it dries and becomes difficult to manipulate.

Also Available in 2 varieties

Cavit
Cavit
Cavit_w
Cavit W

Best used in : Inlay restorations.

Surface hardness of Cavit is maximum, followed by Cavit W. The least surface hardness is of Cavit G.

Cavit W has the best adhesion and is preferred in cases of endodontic treatments.

Cavit which has the maximum surface hardness is preferred for use in areas of maximum load.

How to use Cavit G?

  • Isolate the tooth.
  • Use filling instrument to apply Cavit G.
  • Check for marginal seal and occlusion.

My Review of Cavit G (3M Espe)

Cavit G, a temporary filling material from 3M ESPE. It belongs to the family of Cavit and Cavit W, extremely popular temporary filling materials too.

Cavit G is the cheapest amongst the 3.

I have been using Cavit G as a temporary filling material, as well as in endodontic treatment as a temporary filling material. It is soft in consistency and doesn’t stick to the filling instrument. Also, it can be packed without voids and shaped to adjust both margins and occlusion.

It has a long shelf life of over 2 years but once opened should be used as fast as possible. Care should be taken to close the lid of the jar tightly after use, otherwise the material dries up and becomes brittle. This makes it difficult to manipulate.

I usually use it for periods up to 7 days but at times patients have turned up even after 4 weeks with the filling disintegrating but still intact. I usually ask my patient to avoid chewing on the filling, as it lacks the surface hardness and wear resistance of Cavit, Cavit W or even IRM.

As Cavit G is the cheapest when compared to Cavit or Cavit W, it is readily available in the market. Hence, it can be used as temporary filling material, even in endodontic treatments, keeping the time between appointments to a minimum (less than 7 days) and asking the patient to avoid chewing on the filling.

    1. Hi.
As moisture accelerates the setting of Cavit-G, some of the product will get hard as you come to the end of the jar.
Easiest way is to tightly close the lid immediately after use.
If you have a old jar, you can scoop out a small amount for daily use into the old jar, thereby reducing the number of times you need to open the new jar.
You can also store the product in a place with minimum humidity/moisture , like, refrigerator, dehumidifier etc.
