GC Glass Ionomer Luting & Lining Cement (GIC) is a gold standard cement for cementation of inlay, onlay, post, crowns and bridges.

Pros:
- Doesn’t require any bonding agent.
- Releases fluoride, protecting teeth from caries.
- Doesn’t require extensive isolation methods.
Cons:
- Marginal integrity though good is lost over period of time due to dissolution of cement.
- In the powder-liquid system, mixing of the cement is operator dependent and can lead to change in properties like film thickness, compressive strength etc.
Indications:
- Cementation of metal based inlay, onlay, post, crowns and bridges.
- Cementation of zirconia crowns and bridges.
- As a lining material restorative below amalgam/composite .
Contraindications:
- Pulp capping.
Directions for use:
- For powder – liquid system, dispense 1 scoops of powder (1.8 gm) to 2 drops (1 gm) of liquid.
- Hold the bottle vertically and squeeze gently to dispense the liquid. Close the cap immediately after dispensing.
- Use a oil impregnated mixing pad (supplied in the box). Use a plastic mixing spatula to mix the powder to liquid . Mix for 20 seconds. If you are mixing greater quantity divide the powder and mix part by part but never exceed 20 seconds.
- For cementation, fill the restoration by coating the internal surfaces with sufficient cement. Don’t overfill as that might cause seating problems and difficulty in removing excess cement.
- Working time is 2 minutes from start of mixing.
- Seat immediately and maintain moderate pressure.
- Start removing the excess cement when the excess cement feels rubbery but never pull it from under the crown.
- Protect the margins using a petroleum jelly. Start finishing 4 minutes and 30 seconds after the seating of the crown.

I have been using GC Glass Ionomer Luting Cement to cement my crowns (both PFMs and Zirconia) for all my working life. I have found it to be an excellent cement. A luting cement should be reliable and if used according to manufacturers directions should have a predictable and long lasting result. GC Glass Ionomer Cement does it’s job. It is economical too.
