Asep-RC Root Canal Disinfectant Solution

Asep-RC is a 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate solution that is used in disinfecting root canals during endodontic treatments.

Asep-RC-Components
  • 500 ml pack
  • Calibrated dispenser
Pros:
  • Anti – bacterial and anti – septic agent
  • Used for irrigation and also as a medicament
  • Maintains anti – bacterial activity over a prolonged period
Cons:
  • It reduced effectiveness if used as a medicament during endodontic treatment in apical periodontitis.
  • It forms a orange brown precipitate with sodium hypochlorite known as parachloroaniline. This occludes the dentinal tubules and may reduce the seal of obturated root canal. Parachloroaniline is also known to be carcinogenic. So, ideally after use of sodium hypochlorite, normal saline or 17% EDTA should be used to wash the canal before 2% chlorhexidine is used to irrigate the canal.

My review of ASEP-RC

Asep-RC from ANABOND STEDMAN PHARMA RESEARCH (P) LTD, a Chennai based company is a reliable brand. I have been using it for years now.

Asep-RC comes in a convenient 500 ml pack with a calibrated dispenser. It also has a long expiry of 2 years. It should be stored at a temperature below 30o C.

In my root canal treatment protocol, I use 2% chlorhexidine is the last medicament/ irrigant after 17% EDTA, before I dry the canal using paper points and obturate the canal.
