Review of Waldent Premium Plus MicroMini Handpiece (W148)

Waldent Premium Plus MicroMini Handpiece (W148) is the ‘mini-head’ handpiece of other brands. As with most of Waldent handpieces, it is a high speed handpiece. It is very small in length at 11 cms only. With a ‘micro’ head with height of 10mm only, this handpiece is ideal for use in a patient with reduced mouth opening, in cavity preparation or tooth preparation of upper last molars. It is also ideal for use on children.

Do remember to only use short shank burs with this handpiece. This will give the best performance as well as prolong the life of the cartridge.

For any handpiece, the cartridge is the workhorse. With mini head handpiece, the cartridge is a very crucial component. With the size of cartridge reducing due to the small head of this handpiece, it’s durability is always a question. I have seen, the cartridge of this handpiece start wobbling after just a few months of regular use. This means change of the cartridge, which is half the cost of the handpiece itself.

I have also found that though this handpiece has a high speed, its torque is not equivalent to other mini-heads and you will find it difficult to prepare the tooth specially in case of tooth preparation for crowns & bridges.

I would NOT recommend this handpiece, mostly because of short durability of it’s cartridge. You have better though costlier options in NSK FX Plus Mini Head with ARV High-Speed Handpiece.
